The Story Of “KO”

People ask me from time to time why our kennel name is KO, assuming that stands for Knockout. Actually, that isn't it at all. It stands for “Kristina's Own.” To make a long story short, I came up with the name years ago when I got my first Cocker Spaniel. At that time “Newman's Own” brand salad dressings had just become popular. Also, a very successful Cocker Spaniel in the 1940s (who won Best in Show at Westminster twice, in 1940 and 1941) was named “My Own Brucie.” What can I say? I was still in college… it seemed like a good idea at the time. So my kennel name became “Kristina's Own.” When Derek and I got married he (oddly enough) was a little hesitant to continue to use the name. He claimed that running around dog shows in a kennel jacket with “Kristina's Own” emblazoned across the back was somewhat embarrassing. So we compromised and shortened it to just KO. Now you know the secret. Shhh, don't tell!
